I may be unique but, as a journalist, who has traveled the world for nearly forty years, wines have alwaysbbeen my choice.
I know, Joe Karwig for most of those years and,honestly can say he has been my guiding light on wine selection.
I drop into him, his wife, Betty, virtually ever week tomboy my wine. You would be surprisedbat the big business names you meet.
I don’t even view the wines, I may taste their current recommendation and, tell me to give me a few bottles of their choice.
Whether it is for my own and, Mary’s or, a friend, we gave never had a complaint.
Indeed, as I write this, I am enjoying a great wine I got together and, ask, where else in Ireland, would you get this at the same price.
They supply a great part of the Republic and, I stress, I am not surprised. They are the true home of great, yet affordable, good wines in Ireland.

Was never really a fan of prosecco, mainly because I felt the frizzante versions to be very bland. But I’m slowly coming around and finding bottles, usually spumante, which impress.

Definitely, unless you’re taking notes of some sort, the danger is that you just end up “drinking” as opposed to “tasting”. Obviously that’s fine too and has its place, but if you want to develop as a taster – and a human being – regular, conscientious tasting notes are essential!

I like this. I can still remember being totally put off by the fact that wine stores seemed to presume that you knew your way around a wine shop, that you could read labels and that you knew what you wanted. I used to fail on all three!! Now I gauge a good store by how much at ease they put me and by how much wine talk they don’t use. Plain English (yeah, I still fail at the Irish), friendly chat and good value. You’ve said it all. Kevin

Hi there and thanks for the comment. I love a buttery Chardonnay on occasion myself. There are delicious ones around still. We carry a good selection of Chardonnays in our shop and online (www.karwigwines.ie). This may be a good starting point. I used to love a good buttery Chardonnay {yes it was in the 90′s!}. Still do on occasion though but can be hard to find. Now a good unoaked one will do. Know any nice ones readily available?
